Illustrative response to 575 Wandsworth Road

Writerz&Scribez describe themselves as a “Black-Led organisation working at the intersection of art, health, and equity”. I had the privilege of working with them, along with other artists and poets to respond to the property 575 Wandsworth Road. This house belonged to Khadambi Asalache (1935-2006), a Kenyan-born poet, novelist and British civil servant and is extraordinary for the carvings Asalache created throughout it.

The art and poetry we created was turned into a zine, and was also presented in an in-person and online event. Facilitator Avleen Kaur presents the zine in this instagram post.

My response to this, in a series of three illustrations, was designed to reflect the dreamy, timeless quality of the property, as well as the laborious, intrinsically human quality of the carvings.
